S Koreans boycott Japanese brands as tensions escalate

SEOUL: South Koreans have started boycotting Japanese brands disrupting businesses in one of the worst economic climate for South Korea in a decade.

The anger has prompted a widespread boycott of Japanese services and products, from clothes to clothes and even travel, media reports have said.

Diplomatic tensions between South Korea and Japan intensified after a South Korean court in 2018 instructed Japanese companies to compensate the Koreans who were compelled to work for Japanese occupiers during World War II.

Meanwhile, in an apparent retaliation on July 4, Japan restricted exports of high-tech items to South Korea. Japan, however, denied that the move had any relation with the compensation issue.

Japan then said it was due to ‘inadequate management’ of exports, which Seoul refuted. (Agencies)
