Journalist shot dead in Ireland

IRELAND: A journalist, Lyra McKee, has been shot dead during violence in Londonderry, media reports said.

Dissident republicans have been blamed for killing the 29-year-old journalist during rioting after police searches in Derry’s Creggan area on Thursday night.

Reports said petrol bombs were thrown at police Land Rovers.

Police said the New IRA “are likely to be the ones behind this”.

Last night, a gunman appeared and fired a number of shots towards the police, according to police.

Police said Lyra was wounded, and was taken away from the scene in a police land rover to Altnagelvin Hospital where she died. (Agencies)
