Quake of magnitude 6.1 strikes Taiwan’s coastal city

TAIPEI: An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck Taiwan’s coastal city of Hualien today, media reports said.

The quake shook buildings, and temporarily suspending subway services in the capital Taipei. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been reported.

Television footage showed school children being evacuated from school buildings. Officials said it was the largest quake to hit Taiwan so far this year.

A large crack has been seen in the center of a road in Taipei’s eastern district of Xinyi due to the quake, which hot at a depth of 18 km, according to reports. (Agencies)
