KATHMANDU: Kathmanduites, especially from the Newar community, are observing ‘Gaijatra’, a traditional festival today.
Denizens of the Valley celebrate this festival every year in memory of the deceased member of their families.
The Gaijatra festival, literally means the ‘festival of cows’, falls on the waning moon in the Nepali month of Bhadra. The day is marked by organizing various shows and dramas.
People also take out rallies with some dressed like a cow and some with peculiar costumes and masks.
There is a belief that the cows help the deceased to reach to heaven.
The festival was first started by the Malla dynasty king, Pratap Malla. Meanwhile, artistes and comedians also organize different satirical shows and skits on this day.
