Macron pledges to reconstruct Notre-Dame cathedral

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron has said they would rebuild the 850-year-old cathedral of Notre-Dame after a major fire partially destroyed the Paris landmark.

The fire was declared under control after firefighters managed to save building’s main stone structure, almost nine hours after it started.

The spire and roof, however, collapsed.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear. Officials, however, say it could be linked to extensive renovation works under way.

The office of the Paris prosecutor said the cause was being investigated as an accident.

The fire began at around 18:30 (16:30 GMT) and reached the roof of the cathedral, and destroyed its stained-glass windows and the wooden interior. (Agencies)
