KATHMANDU: Nepal Hatchery Industries’ Association has instructed its member enterprises to shut down their business for the next 10 days.

The decision to this effect has been made to ‘put pressure’ on the government to increase the price of chickens.

Chairperson of the Association, Tika Ram Pokhrel said that they were finding it difficult to generate costs from the price that the government had fixed earlier.

According to him, it would cost around Rs 55 to produce a chick on an average while the market price of a chick comes to around Rs 30.

The Association has urged its members to stop producing chicks for 10 days. Pokhrel also informed that they would destroy the eggs that are waiting to be hatched.

The strike, if implemented, will incur a loss of more than Rs 330 million, he informed.

A total of 200 hatcheries in Nepal are currently doing business in Nepal.
