NC leader Alam loses status of lawmaker

KATHMANDU: Mohammad Aftab Alam, Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker, who was arrested in Rautahat on Sunday morning on the charge of murdering 14 persons, has lost his status of a lawmaker.

With the arrest, Alam cannot exercise his right, including his remuneration and benefits, as a lawmaker.

The decision to this effect was made after police formally informed the federal parliament secretariat about his arrest.

He was arrested over a connection to a bombing on April 9, 2008.

Alam will face suspension only if the court finds him guilty. The position of a lawmaker will also be vacant after that.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has been investigating the incident.

The cadres were reportedly making a bomb following Alam’s order and were injured when the bomb accidentally went off.
