Transportation obstructed as Rapti River swells

RANJHA: Mobility for residents of Bhamka and Amuwagaon has come to a halt for the past two days due to the rising water level in the Rapti River.

Floods in the river have stopped boat service, thereby leaving hundreds of residents of the two villages confined to their homes.

This situation is an annual affair for residents of the two villages located in ward no. 1 of Raptisonari rural municipality, according to local teacher Bhuwan Khuna.

The water level in the river has increased since Saturday morning. As a result, travelers have been affected along with service recipients to the ward office, and the district headquarters.

There is no other mode of transport to cross the river for lack of a bridge. The sick are the most affected with it as there is no health post in the two villages, Khuna said.

Meanwhile, citing danger level of water in the river, the District Administration Office has urged all concerned to remain agile and alert.  As per the measurement center at Kusum, the water level in the river has crossed the danger level of 5.40 meters.

Areas like Fattehpur, Holiya, Betahani, Kamdi, Gangapur and Narainapur have already been inundated with flood water. Construction of the Laxmanpur dam by India on the border is also a reason behind flooding in the coastal areas of Rapti in Banke district.
