Pashtuns urge UN against cultural genocide of their people in Pak

GENEVA: In several billboards across Geneva in Switzerland, Pashtuns have urged the United Nations (UN) to take action against Pakistan to stop the extinction of their people.

The Pashtuns, who mostly reside in Pakistan’s Sindh and Punjab provinces, have continued to face a cultural annihilation along with mistreatment, systematic violence, and intimidation at the hands of the Pakistani military, according to a Business Standard report.

The billboards across Geneva focus an upcoming exposition on the genocide of the Pashtuns in Pakistan.

The exposition to be held on September 17 and September 27 in Geneva is part of a movement to raise Pashtuns’ voices, the report said.

The Pakistani military establishment in the pretext of various operations wreaked havoc and injustices on the entire Pashtun community.

According to the report, hundreds of civilians have been forcibly disappeared or killed.

Pashtuns, a minority group in the region, has been either forced to relegate themselves to such atrocities or leave their homes, according to the report.

The displaced Pashtuns are labelled as terrorists when they try to settle elsewhere.

According to the report, extrajudicial executions of the Pashtuns are on the rise in recent times with a skyrocketing number of deaths and missing persons.

The issue has been raised at a time when Pakistan has been crying foul over Kashmir during the ongoing 42nd UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session in Geneva.

Such a protest is taking place outside the Geneva UN Headquarters. (Agencies)
