India’s SC rejects govt plea to reopen, re-verify NRC in Assam



NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court has rejected the government’s plea to reopen and re-verify National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

The SC said only the hard copies of the lists of inclusions as well as exclusions to be provided at district offices.

It said that the NRC to be updated according to law as per the section 66a Judgment.

According to the NRC Assam, the status of people who were born in India between 1971 and 1987 will be decided on the basis of the final decision by the Supreme Court Constitution bench on the Citizenship Act provisions.

What is NRC?

The NRC contains names of genuine Indian citizens which was first prepared in 1951. The NRC list has currently been updated for Assam. The Indian state of Assam has had a longstanding foreigner problem. (Agencies)
