KATHMANDU: The Nepal Diabetic Society is organizing a conference about diabetes on Thursday with the objective of increasing public awareness against the disease.

Shiba Shrestha, Chairperson of the Society, informed that the cases of diabetes are increasing in Nepal and that the conference would be an eye-opener for the people to understand the health issue.

The event supported by the Kathmandu Metropolis will see principals of over 50 Kathmandu-based secondary schools and medical specialists, professionals and social workers who have been working for the minimization and prevention of diabetes.

Shrestha said the lack of proper dietary behavior and nutrition knowledge has been the major reason behind increasing cases of diabetes in the country.

Diabetes is more prevalent in urban areas, according to Shrestha.

Dr Chunda Bajracharya, the event coordinator, said that they have sought the participation of teachers in the event as it would help spread knowledge about the prevention and minimization of this health issue.
