KATHMANDU: Despite the government’s topmost priority to the road construction efforts, centers of 368 local levels, out of 753, are yet to have road access.

A study conducted by the Local Infrastructure Department found that centers of around 368 local governments had no access to roads.

Most of the centers that are deprived of road access are rural municipalities, said Department’s Director-General Ramchandra Shrestha.

He said that the federal government, in collaboration with the state and local governments, is making plans for the construction of roads and improvement targeting local levels.

Shrestha said, “We have a target to connect the centers of all local levels with blacktopped roads in the next four years. This is estimated to cost around Rs 150 billion.”

According to the study, around 4,200 kilometers of the road needs to be constructed and upgraded to meet the target.

The most portion of this area comes under the jurisdiction of state governments and the projects would be implemented in consultation with respective state governments.
