Two barrow brothers to climb Island Peak

Two Barrow brothers are to set off to climb Nepal’s Island Peak in aid of a mental health charity.

Project Pound Per Metre aims to raise £6,189 to match the Imja Tse mountain’s 6189m elevation in aid of Mind.

Tom Greenway, 26, who is climbing with brother Jamie, will start the journey in the Sagarmatha National Park in the Himalayas tomorrow.

He said: “We’ll spend 10 days trekking through the Khumbu valley to get to Island Peak.

“We will move to high camp on the 20th and hopefully summit on the 21st or 22nd.

“We’re about a third of the way to our total of £6189 but obviously awareness is more important really.

Greenway said he wrote the challenge down when he suffered from depression a few years ago.

“My depression got so bad that at one point I couldn’t do any work, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t do anything,” he said.

“My advice to anyone with mental health issues is to define yourself by what you love.

“Find happiness in music and friends and adventure and the outdoors and travel and awesome food, and you’ll get through it.

“Life is tough and tiring and it always will be.

“But life is also filled with excitement and euphoria and love – it’s worth sticking around for.”

Mr Greenway said the pair would be giving daily updates on their Facebook page @ProjectPoundPerMetre.”
