Call for a ban of cemented grave vaults in Pashupatinath area

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers today asked the government to ban the construction of cemented burial vaults in the Sleshmantak jungle near Pashupatinath area – a world heritage site.

Speaking at a program on the Pashupati area master plan, former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal emphasized the need of protecting the world heritage site.

At the program organized by a sub-committee formed by the parliamentary International Relations Committee to study about the cultural aspects of world heritage sites, Nepal spoke in favor of promoting the use of electric crematorium so as to prevent environmental impact caused by the traditional way of cremation.

He suggested the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) maintain cleanliness in the temple area to give a good impression among visitors.

Likewise, former Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala maintained that the beauty of the temple area should not be spoiled by constructing the cemented grave vaults.

Lawmaker Mohan Baniya opined that the PADT need to undertake heritage conservation works and infrastructure construction under a one-door policy.

Member Secretary of PADT, Dr Pradeep Dhakal stated that the formulation of a master plan to develop the area was delayed as the National Reconstruction Authority was making a survey report in regard with the Pashupatinath area.
