Nepal sees fall in suicide cases



KATHMANDU: Around 5,155 people committed suicide in the country in the last one year.

People chose to commit suicide due to various reasons such as their failure in examinations, souring relations, unwanted pressure, and depression among others.

According to the Nepal Police Headquarters, some 5,155 people committed suicide last fiscal year. While 3,000 committed suicide by hanging, some 1,182 people died by poisoning, 47 by jumping form the cliff, 23 by drowning, 22 by setting oneself on fire, 13 by weapons, four by electric shock, and 1 using an explosive device.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Bishwaraj Pokhrel, informed that domestic problems, strained relations and troubles in the affair have been the common factors provoking the suicide.

However, according to him, the number of such cases slightly decreased last fiscal year compared to the previous fiscal year, which saw a total of 5,317 cases.
