National interest ‘priority’ while signing agreements with China: PM Oli



KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli said on Thursday that his government would hold discussions on economic partnership keeping Nepal’s interest and welfare at the center during the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal.

Prime Minister Oli’s remarks came after he held consultations with former Prime Ministers, former Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Affairs experts at the Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar in connection with President Xi’s state visit to Nepal.

Chinese President Xi is coming to Nepal on a two-day state visit from October 12.

Nepal Communist Party (NCP) spokesperson Narayankaji Shrestha, who was also in the meeting, said Prime Minister Oli expressed the belief that Chinese President’s visit would take Nepal-China relations to a new height.

Prime Minister Oli is also learned to have stated that discussion about the investment model for the construction of Kerung-Kathmandu railway would be held with the Chinese side.

Shrestha quoted PM Oli as saying that the government would hold discussion on issues concerning long-term welfare and necessity.

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs Shrestha also said that discussions would be held on issues of road and connectivity with China, besides construction of Tokha-Chhahare tunnel, upgrading and operation of Kimathanka and Korala check points, as well as upgrading of Araniko highway.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said that he suggested the government to collaborate with China based on the country’s welfare and necessity.

Dr Mahat also drew the government’s attention to refrain from making hurry to launch big projects.
