KATHMANDU: A high alert has been issued in Nepal fearing that North Korea might launch cyber attacks against the country, yet again.
Banks and financial institutes in Nepal have been altered to this effect after North Korea is reported to have stolen money from various banks in foreign countries by hacking SWIFT codes, of late.
According to confidential report of the United Nations, North Korea has accumulated around US$ 2 billion for weapons through high-profile cyber attacks.
A high alert has been issued to especially banks and financial institutes in Nepal to preempt such cyber attacks, said officials.
According to a Nepal Police official, a group of North Korean hackers had stolen Rs over 40 million from NIC Asia Bank by hacking SWIFT codes. The hacking took place on October 19 (2017) when Nepali people were observing Laxmi Puja.
They succeeded to transfer the money to eight banks of six countries.
