Automobile sales see worst-ever monthly drop in India

NEW DELHI: Sales of automobiles in India witnessed its worst-ever drop in August this year with dispatches in all segments, including two-wheelers and passenger vehicles, Indian media reports have said.

This has continued to plummet as the automobile sector reels under an unprecedented downturn.

This, as Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), said, is the steepest fall in overall vehicle sales in India.

The SIAM started recording wholesale of vehicle data in 1997-98.

According to the data, vehicle sales across categories stood at 18,21,490 units last month in 2019 as against 23,82,436 units in August 2018, which is a fall of 23.55 percent.

In July 2019, the overall auto sales witnessed its sharpest decline in nearly 19 years.

Likewise, domestic public vehicles sales saw a fall in August, declining by 31.57 percent to 1,96,524 units from 2,87,198 units last year.

According to SIAM, car sales in August were the worst ever. In August, domestic car sales were down 41.09 percent. (Agencies)
