India’s Editors Guild flays arrests of journalists

NEW DELHI: The Editors Guild of India has condemned the arrests of journalist Prashant Kanaujia, and an editor of a private TV news channel by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government on Saturday.

Police on Saturday arrested journalist Kanojia for allegedly sharing what has been said ‘objectionable’ post against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on social media.

The news channel said police also arrested its head and its editor the same day for airing ‘defamatory’ content against Adityanath.

The Guild has issued a statement alleging the police of misusing the laws. It said that the move was an intimidation of the press and would stifle freedom of expression. (Agencies)
