U.S. authorities arrest 680 workers in Mississippi

MISSISSIPPI: U.S. immigration agents have arrested around 700 people at seven agricultural processing plants in Mississippi, international media reports have said.

This, as federal officials said, could be one of the largest worksite enforcement operation in a state.

A statement issued by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said authorities detained around 680 people working illegally at the plants, and seized business records.

Reports said several of those detained would be released for ‘humanitarian reasons’. They, however, are required to appear in U.S. immigration court. Other detainees will be transported to the Jena-based ICE facility in Louisiana.

The ICE authorities have not specified the nationalities of the workers. (Agencies)
