Journalists form human chain to protest Media Council Bill

KATHMANDU: Journalists on Saturday protested the Media Council Bill forming a human chain at Babarmahal in the Capital City.

The protest was organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists.

The human chain was formed from Babarmahal to New Baneshwor. Former FNJ office-bearers and journalists of different media organizations participated in the protest.

Addressing the protest assembly, FNJ chairperson Gobinda Acharya demanded the bill be scrapped, for it was brought breaching the constitution.

He also asked for the fulfillment of a 16-point demand put forward by the FNJ relating to an amendment to the bill or they would intensify the protest against the government.

The umbrella organization of Nepali journalists has been protesting the proposed bill saying that the bill aims to curtail the constitutional rights they are exercising and establish the proposed Media Council as a government-controlled body.
