SC puts ban on citizenship issuance by descent

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has put a ban on the issuance of citizenship cards to the children of those who hold citizenship by descent.

A division bench of Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Sushmalata Mathema on Tuesday issued the order, putting the ban on the distribution of the citizenship by descent, reversing its earlier decision.

On April, the Ministry of Home Affairs dispatched a circulation to the district administration offices across the nation to issue citizenship by descent.

SC has issued a short-term order staying the home ministry’s circulation until the verdict is reviewed and issued again by a full bench.
