Month-long Ramadan begins today

KATHMANDU: Ramadan, the holiest month in the Muslim calendar, has started from today.

Muslims across the world, for a month, will abstain from eating, drinking and having sexual relations during daylight hours.

Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, a time of restraint and austerity, during the lunar month. Muslims around the world give up earthly pleasures, focus on prayer and read the Quran. Many make donations to charity to fight hunger.

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, which lasts for three days. Gifts are exchanged, and children often receive cash and new clothing.
