Nepal records 1,002 VAW cases last month



KATHMANDU: The cases of violence against women (VAW) have been on rise lately in the country, with as many as 1,002 such cases recorded last month of Kartik, according to the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizen.

The study conducted by the Nepal Police and the Ministry showed the total VAW cases recorded last month, 177 were related to rape, 75 related to polygamy, 5 child marriage, four allegations of witchery and six related to illegal abortion.

State-wise, State no 2 recorded the highest cases of VAW standing at 341.

The data was unveiled in the context of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence being run in the UN-member nations.

The campaign is run from November 25 to December 10 annually. The campaign for this year is named, ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape!’

The Ministry had urged the concerned ministers and agencies of the federal government, all seven State governments, District Coordination Committees and all 753 local units and stakeholders to run the campaign that challenges the violence against women and children.
