13th SAG: Nepal registers highest number of gold medals in taekwondo



KATHMANDU: The closing day of taekwondo championships has added another gold medal for the nation today.

Now, the total number of gold medals contributed by taekwondo in the South Asian Games (SAG) 2019 is 12.

Similarly, by the end, India has registered 6 gold, Sri Lanka has achieved 4 gold, Pakistan and Bangladesh has won 1-1 gold in taekwondo.

Bhupen Shrestha from Nepal defeated Akshay Hooda of India in the finals with the leading score of 2 points.

Bhupen Shrestha and Akshay Hooda had back to back points score of 29-27 in men’s category under 87 kg weight Kyorugi competition.

Likewise, Pakistan has scored two gold medals, under 80 kg and under 58 kg, in Taekwondo today. Pakistani Haroon Khan won the final by defeating Indian Athlete Niraj Chaudhary by 9 points. Athlete Khan registered gold when his score reached to 27 points.

Likewise, Pakistani Rab Nawaz defeated Nepalese Kiran Bahadur Ale in the final with a score of 33-7.

In women’s weight category of 49 kg and 67 kg, Purva Dattatry Dixit (India) won a gold medal against Sri Lankan Athlete Irangani Pushpa by 8 points. For the same weight category, Yunisha Rain of Nepal and Ayesha Noor of Pakistan won the bronze medal.

The highest number of gold medals in today’s Taekwondo Kyorugi has been scored by India, altogether 3 golds, all in women’s weight categories of 49 kg, 63 kg, and 73 kg respectively.

The Indian gold medalists for these weights are Purva Dattatry Dixit, Ruchika Bhave, and Margerette Maria.
