Merger of cooperatives gains momentum at KMC

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has expedited the process to facilitate the merger of cooperatives operating in its boundary.

A total of 1,856 cooperatives are currently running at KMC. The current measure is to reduce the number to 700.

KMC has been initiating the process to integrate small cooperatives operating in KMC in line with the constitutional mandate to the local levels to regulate the cooperatives.

The Saptadiya Multipurpose Cooperative of ward 13 and Biraj Savings and Credit Cooperative based in KMC-24 have already been merged in the recent past.

The new cooperative has been named as Saptadeep Cooperative.

Likewise, Cityvillage Savings and Credit Cooperative based in ward-22 and Tapasw Savings and Credit have also merged to be named as City Village Savings and Credit.

KMC Administrative Chief Namaraj Dhakal said the policy has been taken to merge small cooperatives for effective service delivery and proper management.

The Cooperative Act-2074 BS and KMC Cooperative Act-2074 have specified provisions for the merger of cooperatives.
