Jagan Chapagain elected IFRC Secretary General



KATHMANDU: Nepali humanitarian and Red Cross Red Crescent veteran, Jagan Chapagain, has been elected as the new Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

A meeting of the IFRC Governing Board elected Chapagain to the post amid a special program on Tuesday.

Chapagain will take charge as IFRC Secretary General from February 1, 2020 for the next four years.

He is the first Nepali national to hold such a coveted post.

An engineer by training, Chapagain holds more than 25 years’ experience within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Most recently, Chapagain has served a series of senior IFRC roles, including as Regional Director for Asia Pacific, as Chief of Staff and as Under Secretary General for Programs and Operations.

A total of Red Cross societies of 190 countries including Nepal are involved in the IFRC.
