Women Minister Thapa assures of acting against GBV



BIRATNAGAR: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Thamamaya Thapa has assured of giving attention to the effective implementation of laws against gender-based violence (GBV).

Speaking today at a press meet in Biratnagar, the minister said the government had celebrated the 16th Jeth, 2076 BS (May 30, 2019) as the National Women Rights Day and the ‘GBV-free nation campaign’ is going on at the federal, state and local level governments.

Thapa said that support and cooperation of all were necessary for the three-tier government to make the campaign successful. The Women Minister underlined the need of ending all sorts of GBV including violence against women to build an equitable society.

On the occasion, she stressed the need for sensitiveness on the part of policymakers and executive bodies for the continuity of the campaign, to collect necessary feedback, and make rural women aware of their constitutional rights to establish a women-friendly society.

In her response to journalists’ queries, she said the party and government had been advised to ensure the 33 percent women participation in the state chief posts and 41 percent participation at the local level.
