Malta PM should resign now: EU parliamentary mission

VALLETTA: The head of a European Parliament delegation, posted to Malta for the appraisal  of the rule of law on the EU’s smallest country for the fact-finding of scandal over the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a journalist, popularly known for probing the corruption charges against the key officials, has concluded that the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat should resign immediately.

However, the PM has sought some more time in power and said that he will resign next month giving enough time for his party to choose his successor.

Citing some of the promises the party failed to meet and after talking to the Justice Minister Owen Bonnici, Sophie In’t Veld, the leader of the Mission expressed her skepticism about the possibility of the PM’s resign unless extra pressure was generated.

The PM and the Justice Minister have not made any comment on the Mission lead’s remarks.

Critics think the PM Muscat could be using his influence to impact the investigation on his side; and like the family members of the deceased they also think the PM should step aside to ensure fair investigation.

The opposition has threatened to boycott the parliament seeking resignation.

The scandal has raised concerns about the credibility of the country’s commitment to democracy.
