KATHMANDU: Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun today said all sections of the society need to join hands for the protection of people with intellectual disabilities.

Inaugurating the 24th Conference of Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities in Kathmandu on Tuesday on the occasion of the 28th International Day of Persons with Disabilities, he emphasized the need of treating people with disabilities in the same way other people are treated.

He said that they, too, need support in their educational and all-round development.

Vice President Pun said that people with physical disabilities can perform well if they were given the appropriate environment.

Stating that Nepal’s constitution has made the provision for the respect, security and participation of people with disabilities, he said it guaranteed their participation in politics, public services, and economic and social development.

According to the National Census conducted in 2011, two percent of Nepal’s total population comprises people with disabilities.
