Rahul Gandhi resigns from the post of Congress chief



NEW DELHI: India’s Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has announced his resignation from his post today.

Sharing his resignation letter on Twitter, Rahul said it was an honor for him to serve the Congress party. He further said that he owes the country hand his party debt of love and tremendous gratitude, Indian media reports have said.

According to reports, Congress senior leader Motilal Vora is likely to replace Rahul Gandhi as party president.

Rahul Gandhi, who had been adamant to his decision to quit the party top post, has also demanded elections to appoint the next party chief.

Earlier today, Rahul said the party now needs to decide on the new party president without any delay saying that since he has already submitted his resignation. “I am not the party chief,” Rahul told reporters in the Indian capital of New Delhi today.

The Congress party has been under a leadership crisis following the Lok Sabha election disaster. Rahul also said that the new party chief should not be from the Nehru or Gandhi family.

Rahul had offered to quit from his post on May 25 after his party managed to win just 52 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election. (Agencies)
