13th SAG: Nepal bags gold in women’s triathlon

KATHMANDU: Nepal has won a gold medal in the triathlon towards women’s group under the 13th South Asian Games (SAG) underway in Nepal.

Sony Gurung of Nepal completed the triathlon in one hour 13 minutes and 45 seconds to clinch the gold. The triathlon was held at Gaurighat on the bank of the Phewa Lake in Pokhara. The triathlon includes 750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling and five kilometers race.

She outclassed six competitors including two each from Nepal, India and Sri Lanka. She won the first gold medal under the 13th SAG in any event of the Games being held in Pokhara.

Sarojini Devi and Praganna Munna of India completed the triathlon in one hour, 14 minutes and one hour 14 minutes and 57 seconds respectively and clinched silver medal and bronze for their country.

Triathlon was included in SAG from its 12th edition held in India before this. In the 12th SAG, Nepal had won one silver medal towards the mixed event and a bronze towards women’s individual event.

India wins gold towards men’s triathlon

Adarsha MN Sinimal of India won a gold medal in the triathlon towards men’s category. He clocked one hour two minutes and 31 seconds. Vishwa Rizti Saicom, also of India, won the silver by completing the triathlon in one hour two minutes and 59 seconds.

Nepal’s Basanta Tharu bagged bronze medal completing the fixed distance in one hour three minutes and six seconds.
