IGP Khanal leading probe against Speaker Mahara

KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sarbendra Khanal is leading an investigation into the accusation of sexual assault against Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara who has resigned from the post.

Sources said IGP Khanal, Metropolitan Police Commissioner DIG Shailesh Thapa Kshetri and SSP Uttam Raj Subedi of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu are assisting the investigation team.

“IGP Khanal himself is leading the investigation as accusation has been made against a high-profile personality,” a source at Nepal Police Headquarters told Khabarhub, “A core team of DIGs in the Valley and Katmandu SSP has been formed. They are coordinating with the probe team.”

The source added that investigation into the case has already started and a team from Metropolitan Police Circle, New Baneshwor has been deployed to the incident site. The team has recovered a beer bottle, broken power glass and glasses among others.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai said the Ministry of Home Affairs is looking at the incident closely.

“We have asked the investigation team to conduct the investigation without any fear,” he told Khabarhub.
