Nokia to launch budget 5G smartphone next year

Nokia has been releasing a number of pretty decent budget handsets as an affordable alternative. And entering the even more expensive 5G market is next on the list.

HMD Global’s chief product officer, Juho Sarvikas, has announced that Nokia will be making a “value” 5G smartphone set to launch next year that will be available for half the price of current 5G offerings on the market.

“We see a particular opportunity for us in bringing 5G to a more affordable segment as we enter the market,” he said. “I would say affordable in relation to what’s available today. I would love to see us at half of the price where you have 5G today.”

Based on the range or 5G smartphone prices floating about today, we’re probably looking at something in the ballpark £600 or less. We hope.

HMD is currently “working closely” with chip manufacturers and network providers so we’ll see what it has to offer closer to the time. (Agencies)
