Amphan cyclone wreaks havoc in India, kills 72



KATHMANDU: A cyclone called Amphan arising from the Bay of Bengal has hit Bangladesh and India, killing at least 84 people.

The cyclone has claimed lives of 72 people in the West Bengal of India and 12 in Bangladesh, BBC reported.

Trees, electric poles were uprooted while the roofs of thousands of houses were blown away by the cyclone that gusted at the speed of 120 to 133 km per hour.

According to reports, some people were crushed to death after the houses caved in due to the windstorm.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a field visit to to West Bengal and Odisha to take stock of the situation in the wake of Cyclone Amphan today.

Amphan was the most powerful cyclone to strike eastern India and Bangladesh in over a decade. It tore down power lines, uprooted trees, caused flooding, triggered mass evacuations and left at least 84 people dead in West Bengal and Bangladesh, where it made landfall.
