KATHMANDU: US President Donald Trump has said the White House coronavirus task force will be winding down within weeks.

“We are bringing our country back,” President Trump said during a visit to a mask-manufacturing factory in Arizona.

Critics have accused the president of sacrificing Americans’ public health in his eagerness to reopen the US economy ahead of his re-election battle in November.

Acknowledging a human cost to the plans, Trump told reporters that some people will be affected badly but we have to get our country open and we have to get it open soon.

America, the worst-hit in terms of both deaths and infection cases, has reported 2,329 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the total to 72,250 as of Wednesday morning.

According to the latest figures collated by Worldometer, with 24,434 new cases, the number of infection cases has surged to 1,237,269.

Currently, 965, 215 coronavirus patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals across America, of which 16,175 are critical.  Meanwhile, 199, 804 have recovered after treatment.
