KATHMANDU: A Secretariat meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party is taking place today.

The meeting has been called to iron out differences seen in the party that cropped up especially after Prime Minister KP Oli brought two ordinances. The meeting will take place at 5:30 pm.

In the Secretariat meeting held on Wednesday, Dahal-Nepal faction had asked Prime Minister Oli to resign from the post of Prime Minister and party chair.

In response, Oli had proposed Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam as the prime minister and Madhav Nepal as the party chair with effect once the Coronavirus pandemic subsides.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal met with Oli at the latter’s official residence in Baluwatar on Friday.

According to a standing committee member close to Dahal, Oli in the meeting urged Dahal to lead the party for five years and create environment for him to run the government for the reaming term. Oli was also for removing two-chairman provision in the party.

Following the meeting with Oli, Dahal left for Koteshwor to meet with Madhav Kumar Nepal and shared with him what had been discussed in the meeting.

Amidst differences without striking chords, the Secretariat meeting had been scheduled for today.

The intra-party dispute in the NCP has touched a new height of late especially after Prime Minister Oli brought two ordinances.

A cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Baluwatar on April 24 had decided to withdraw the ordinances related to political party and constitutional council following criticisms from all quarters.

President Bidya Bhandari scraped the ordinances invoking Article 114(1b) of the Constitution on the same day at the recommendation of the government.

These ordinances had been brought and authenticated by the President on April 20.
