Trump suspends WHO funds over pandemic

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said he has instructed his administration to suspend funding to World Health Organization (WHO) alleging the world body for failing to handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump’s move, however, has drawn immediate condemnation.

President Trump claimed that the WHO had ‘failed’ in its basic duty. He said that WHO must be held accountable.

He also alleged the WHO of promoting China’s ‘disinformation’ about the novel coronavirus.

President Trump further stated that the US continues to engage with the WHO in pursuit of ‘meaningful reforms’.

He also stated that the ‘hold’ on the funding would continue saying that the US reviews the WHO’s warnings about the COVID-19 and China.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres claimed it was ‘not the right time’ to suspend funds to the WHO or any other organization combating the pandemic.

Guterres said it the time for unity and for the international community to work in tandem to stop the coronavirus and its shattering consequences.
