5,000 Nepalis in Maldives asked to return home

MALE: Nepali migrant workers are facing crisis in the Maldives after most of the restaurants and resorts were shot down due to coronavirus pandemic, of late.

The hotel and restaurant operators in the country have already told the Nepali migrant workers to return home.

It is learnt that around 5,000 Nepalis have been provided with tickets and asked to return home.

Over 11,000 Nepali people are currently working at various hotels and restaurants in the country of islands.

There are over 150 luxurious resorts in the Maldives where a large number of Nepali people have been working.

Most of the resorts have been shut down.

It is said that 5000 Nepali people will be sent back home as soon as the lockdown is lifted in Nepal. However, no coordination has been made with the Nepali Embassy yet. Nepali Embassy in Sri Lanka looks after the issues of the Maldives.

No Nepalis have been infected with coronavirus in the country. A total of 20 Nepali people have tested positive for Coronavirus in the Maldives, of which 13 have returned home after recovery.
