SAO PAULO: Brazil’s education minister has accused Chinese medical equipment makers of profiteering from the coronavirus pandemic, international media reports have said.

Brazil’s Education Minister Abraham Weintraub said in Twitter, which he later deleted on Sunday, that coronavirus would help China dominate the world.

He also mocked Chinese accents by referencing a cartoon character with a speech impediment.

The Chinese embassy in Brazil denounced the minister in a statement on Monday.

The embassy labeled the statement as absurd and despicable declarations triggered by racist character and unspeakable objectives.

This, the embassy said, caused negative influences in bilateral relations.

Brazil’s Education Ministry, however, declined comment on the issue. Minister Weintraub did not respond.

The minister, in a radio interview, dismissed claims that he was a racist.

He, meanwhile, redoubled his attacks on China accusing Chinese manufacturers of profiteering. (With inputs from Agencies)
