SAARC Sec-Gen Weerakoon visits ISSR, Khabarhub

KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Secretary-General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, on Wednesday visited the office of Institute for Strategic and Socio-Economic Research (ISSR) and Khabahub at Durbar Marg, Kathmandu.

He assumed charge of office as the Secretary-General of the SAARC with effect from 1 March 2020 as the fourteenth Secretary-General of the eight-member regional body.

Speaking briefly during his visit, Weerakoon said he was happy to be in Nepal, the land of Gautam Buddha.

A Sri Lankan career diplomat, Weerakoon has succeeded Amjad Sial of Pakistan who returned home completing his three-year tenure in April.

Prior to his new diplomatic assignment, Weerakoon was the senior additional secretary to the President of Sri Lanka.

He has also served as the Foreign Secretary and Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs of Sri Lanka.

Weerakoon, who holds an MSc degree in Economics from the University of London, has also served as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to Norway.
