Death toll in Delhi violence goes up to 42

NEW DELHI: The death toll in the Delhi violence has now gone up to 42. The Health Department has confirmed 4 more deaths on Friday.

The death toll was 38 till Thursday and among them are an Intelligence Bureau jawan and a Delhi Police head constable.

Violent clashes broke out in northeast Delhi on Sunday evening that continued for 2 days before the rampaging mobs could be controlled, Indian media reported.

On Friday, an uneasy calm prevailed in the tense northeast Delhi. There were some areas of normalcy in the riot-hit localities and some shops were seen opening later in the day.

While many of the 42 dead have been identified, many of the bodies are yet to be identified. Some bodies, including that of the IB driver, were fished out of drains in different parts of northeast Delhi.

Delhi Police has transferred the northeast Delhi riots probe to the crime branch, and the cases will be probed by two Special Investigation Teams (SITs).

Police have filed 48 FIRs into the Delhi violence case.
