SC issues show-cause notice on exempting ex-PMs Bhattarai and Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday issued a show-cause notice in the name of defendants on not implicating former Prime Ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Dr. Baburam Bhattarai in Lalita Niwas land grab scam.

Responding to a writ filed by Advocate Bal Krishna Neupane, a single bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana asked the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to furnish clarification within 15 days.

Neupane had filed the writ against the former PMs seeking the court’s order to initiate corruption case against them as well.

It should be noted that the anti-graft body (CIAA) had lodged corruption cases against three former ministers in the Lalita Niwas land grab scam.

The CIAA had, however, spared former PMs Dr. Bhattarai and Nepal who had headed the cabinet during the time.

The CIAA had in its decision said that looking into the cabinet’s policy decisions does not fall under its jurisdiction.

In the writ, senior advocate Neupane has stated that the CIAA has exempted Dr. Bhattarai and Nepal.
