KATHMANDU: With the coming into effect of Nepal-China Transit Treaty, four sea-routes and three dry ports of China have become accessible for Nepal now.

In a press meet organized at the Ministry for Industry, Commerce and Supply, Baikuntha Aryal, the Secretary at the Ministry made it public that Tianjin (Xiangang), Lianyungang, Shenzhen, and Zhanjiang four seaports are now open to Nepal.

According to Aryal, three land ports Lanzhou, Lhasa, Xigatse have also become accessible for Nepal for trade with third countries. Aryal informed that the Transit Treaty had come into effect since Jan.1, 2020.

Nepal and China have agreed to let Nepal use six other border trade point of China. Among the agreed six trade points Rasuwagadhi (Rasuwa) and Tatopani(Sindhupalchowk) points are already in operation whereas Yari (Humla), Kimathanka(Sankhuwasabha) Nechung/Korala(Mustang) and Olangchungola(Taplejung) have become open for the purpose.

According to Aryal, the Transit Treaty with India has already been renewed though the government is still working on the list of the things that can be added in the treaty. He said, “We will revise the treaty including new things that we have felt have to be endorsed in the treaty.”

Secretary Aryal claimed that the new treaty would make room for Nepal to use the internal water route of India for the export or import of goods and supplies. “This will pave way for the operation of Nepali flag bearer ships in India,” Aryal spoke optimistically.

According to the Ministry, now Nepal can import or export goods using three-terminal buildings lying at Sahebgunj, Kalughat and Varanasi, all lying in the water route of India.

Likewise, Aryal added that Nepal and India have agreed to operate Nepali rail from Biratnagar, Birgunj to Kolkata and Haldiya.
