NCP heavyweights hold talks on Speaker appointment

KATHMANDU: Chairpersons of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) KP Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal are holding a meeting at Baluwatar.

According to Baluwatar sources, the meeting between the chairpersons is dwelling on the appointment of a Speaker for the House of Representatives (HoR).

Three leaders – Parliamentary Deputy Party Leader Subas Nembang, Deputy Speaker Shivamaya Tumbahamphe and Standing Committee member Agni Sapkota are in a fray for the elections of the Speaker.

Prime Minister Oli is backing Nembang while Pushapa Kamal Dahal is in favor of Sapkota. Similarly, Tumbahamphe is being backed by President Bidya Bhandari.

If the chairpersons reached an agreement on the name of the Speaker by today, the NCP will officially announce the candidate through the Secretariat meeting of the NCP by tomorrow morning.

A meeting of the HoR has been scheduled for 1 pm tomorrow. The ruling NCP finalizes the name by tomorrow morning, the HoR will endorse the name of the Speaker.
