Nepal holds by-elections for 52 vacant posts



KATHMANDU: The voting for by-elections to elect people’s representatives in various 52 vacant posts that begun from 7:00 am concluded at 5 pm on Saturday evening.

According to Election Commission (EC), votes were cast in 246 voting centers having 537 polling booths of 37 districts in the country. It has put a preliminary turnout of 70 percent.

A total of 273 candidates are in the fray. There were a total of 454,114 eligible voters for the by-elections.

The voting was held for a member of the House of Representatives in Kaski constituency-2, while for State Assembly members in Bhaktapur, Baglung and Dang. Similarly, the election is also for the mayor at Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City among others.

Explosions took place at four voting centers in Kaski district. Bombs were detonated at Armala, Bagmare, Nawaprabhat Secondary School and Pokhara Metropolitan City-16 voting centers in the district.

Similarly, bombs were found at Kucheda and Kanagada of Adarsha Rural Municipality of Doti. A bomb disposal team of the Nepal Army defused them and now the vote casting is underway smoothly in the district now.

A suspicious object was found on the Mahakali highway at Silkelek of Dogadakedar Rural Municipality-5 in Baitaidi.
