Medical colleges adamant on not refunding excess fees

KATHMANDU: Operators of private medical colleges have remained adamant about not returning the additional fees charged from the students even with the government’s 15-day deadline ending on Tuesday.

The operators from medical college held a meeting with Minister for Education Girirajmani Pokharel today on the issue.

During the meeting, Minister Pokharel urged the medical colleges to return the overcharged fees.

“We have expressed our commitments to make a review. The fees have been charged as determined by Kathmandu University,” said an operator of the medical college emerging from the meeting, “The excess fee can’t be refunded.”

Minister Pokharel postponed the meeting after the medical colleges remained firm on their position. Operators of six medical colleges had attended the meeting.

Katmandu Medical College of Sinamangal, College of Medical Sciences of Chitwan, Lumbini Medical College of Palpa, Nepal Medical College of Kathmandu, Nepalgunj Medical College of Kohalpur and Birat Medical College of Morang claimed they took the fees as determined by the university.

Meanwhile, a meeting is underway at the Ministry of Home Affairs being attended by Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Education Minister Pokharel among others on the issues.

The deadline issued by the government to medical college expired today. Although the government had warned them of booking for fraud, the colleges have remained adamant on not refunding the excess fees.
