Engineer Lamichhane turns cattle farming into lucrative side business

GORKHA: Civil engineer Kumar Lamichhane of Gorkha has demonstrated that hard work and dedication can lead to success in any profession. Earning a monthly profit of Rs. 1.5 million from cattle farming, he has emerged as an example of entrepreneurial success in the community.

Lamichhane operates Kshitij Integrated Agriculture Farm Pvt. Ltd. in Ramkot, Dandapauwa, Nagarjun Municipality-6, Kathmandu. He established the farm in May 2020 and has been running the business alongside his engineering career.

Originally from Khahare, Siranchok Rural Municipality-7, Gorkha district, Lamichhane rents six ropanis of land for the farm at a monthly cost of Rs. 100,000. He initially invested Rs. 100 million in the cattle farming business.

Starting with 30 buffaloes, the farm has now expanded to 200 cows and 50 buffaloes.

“After graduating as an engineer, I worked in the construction sector. For the past seven years, my wife, engineer Sangita, and I have been involved in both engineering and cattle farming. Our business has created employment opportunities for several people, and the income is also quite encouraging,” Lamichhane said.

The farm currently produces around 1,200 litres of milk daily. Some of its production is supplied to the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC), Namuna Dairy and other dairy businesses in the Kathmandu Valley.

According to Lamichhane, buffalo milk sells for Rs. 170 per litre, while cow milk is priced at Rs. 100 per litre. The farm is equipped with machines for milking both cows and buffaloes. The enterprise currently provides direct and indirect employment to around 50 people.

Lamichhane said the farm generates monthly revenue of approximately Rs. 4.5 million to Rs. 5 million from milk sales. After deducting operating expenses, however, the business earns a net monthly profit of around Rs. 1.5 million.

He added that a significant portion of the farm’s expenditure goes towards purchasing fodder and hay to feed the cattle.
