KATHMANDU: Madhu Acharya, who was elected Vice President of the Nepali Congress (NC) at the party’s 15th General Convention, has said he will take the initiative to bring democrats and members of the Gen Z who remain outside the party into the Nepali Congress.
Speaking briefly after his election, Acharya said the general convention delegates had endorsed the agenda of change and transformation that he had been advocating within the party.
He said the election had placed greater responsibility on him and other leaders to advance their proposed agenda and fulfil their commitments. Acharya added that the trust placed in them by party leaders and cadres must be met with greater dedication, energy and effort.
He said he felt a greater responsibility to work actively towards transforming the party.
Acharya said the Nepali Congress should reach out to democrats who believe in democratic values but are not affiliated with any political party.
He stressed the need to bring such individuals into the party to broaden its support base and strengthen its democratic character.
Referring to the Gen Z, which has come forward demanding change in the country, Acharya said its expectations had yet to be adequately addressed.
He said the Nepali Congress should engage with young people who have taken to the streets demanding change, bring them into the party and work together to advance their agenda.
Acharya said the party’s transformation should go hand in hand with efforts to connect with democrats and young people who remain outside its organisational structure.
He added that the Congress must take their concerns seriously and collaborate with them to fulfil their aspirations for change.
