KATHMANDU: Police in New Delhi have detained around 60 lawyers near the Supreme Court of India amid ongoing protests in the country.
Those detained include senior lawyers and women advocates, triggering concern among members of the legal community.
Pradeep Rai, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, expressed serious concern over the incident in a social media post and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the detained lawyers.
Rai said the arbitrary detention of lawyers and attempts to intimidate or threaten them were unacceptable.
Following the Bar Association’s request for immediate intervention, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed that all detained lawyers be released without delay.
Rai later said he had spoken with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in New Delhi and that the police administration had assured him the lawyers would be released immediately.
